Visitation Church

Revitalization of the historic Country Club Plaza district and a resurgence of the urban core have created both opportunities and challenges for one of the oldest parishes in Kansas City. Visitation Parish faced an immediate need to expand the existing sanctuary from 300 to 800 seats, in addition to a new chapel, and approximately 18,000 SF of classrooms, fellowship hall and the various functions necessary to support this thriving church community.

Skillful work utilized the best of the existing historic structure in service of the new and ambitious program. While a portion of the existing structure was demolished to make way for the new worship space, the majority of the former sanctuary is preserved for use as a Narthex, including the landmark Spanish colonial towers which have become part of the iconography of the city. The design adapts the appropriate characteristics of this historic style and uses them to give the new addition an architectural image that complements both the existing building and the residential neighborhood around it. The building itself is only part of a larger master plan which includes extensive site development which makes this a project worthy of its rich heritage. The project was 51,400 SF with a total project cost of $13 million.
