Covenant Chapel
In order to accommodate its growing congregation and the additional services needed to better serve the needs of its members, Covenant Chapel sought the professional help of Berger Devine Yaeger, Inc. BDY worked closely with the church and city to provide a revised master plan that not only would lay the foundation for future growth, but also create a new campus image that would help the church blend in with the surrounding residential community. To serve the immediate space needs, Phase I consisted of new administration offices along with additional educational rooms to make up the two-story, 15,000 SF addition to the church’s existing worship center. Also, by relocating the administration department, the church was able to expand the size of its existing narthex, thus providing a more suitable gathering area for its congregation during church functions. The addition not only had to co-exist with the existing building on site, but also reflect the new “church in a park” image. The design achieves this goal through the usage of natural Kansas limestone, stucco, gabled roof elements, and a timber framed entry canopy. These exterior elements have now become the standard material palette for all future phases to help create the campus feeling the church is pursuing. Future buildings included in the master plan include a youth building and gymnasium, and a new 1,200 seat sanctuary. The existing sanctuary will then be converted to additional education, multi-purpose, and youth services space.
